‘KODO – Soul of Motion’

KODO captures the very instant energy becomes motion. It’s the muscular beauty you see when an animal pounces, or when a human leaps into action. Everywhere you look, this dynamic poise is enhanced by elegant detail. The five-point grille, defining body lines and powerful stance all show our design philosophy in action.

The ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design direction has shaped the dynamic style and premium presence of Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda CX-5, Mazda CX-9 and our first small SUV, Mazda CX-3.

To further explore the beauty of ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’, Mazda Design is now pursuing new challenges in product and craftsmanship to stimulate and enrich daily life.

‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ beyond the automobile

Mazda is dedicated to building cars that are more than just a mass of metal. We create cars that can communicate with the driver on an emotional level, as if the vehicles were alive.

Creating automobiles as art is Mazda Design’s raison d’être, and now we turn our sights on the challenge of creating other artefacts according to the KODO design philosophy.

The roots of KODO

Throughout its history, Mazda has explored various design themes of motion.

A fusion of functionality and beauty – design in motion is all about capturing the muscular vigour you see when an animal pounces.

The sleek and aerodynamic lines of every Mazda is enhanced by the visionary KODO design philosophy which initially began its journey with the SHINARI concept car.

Vision of the future

RX-VISION represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality; a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car with exquisite, KODO design-based proportions only Mazda could envision, and powered by the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine. The rotary engine is a symbol of the company’s “never-stop-challenging” spirit.

The next rotary engine has been named SKYACTIV-R, expressing the company’s determination to take on challenges with convention-defying aspirations and the latest technology, just as it did when developing SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY.

Going beyond

With the latest embodiment of the KODO Design theme, this concept car represents the power and vitality of a wild animal while maintaining a sense of refined dignity. KOERU is a fitting name for Mazda’s newest foray into the growing crossover SUV market as it is Japanese for “to exceed”.

The latest SKYACTIV Technology ensures the model provides outstanding environmental performance without compromising on Mazda’s renowned driving pleasure.

The shape of things to come

HAZUMI exhibits the best of Mazda technology, innovation and design. This concept car refuses to bow to the conventions of the subcompact class or compromise in any area of Mazda vehicle engineering. The Mazda HAZUMI indicates the ideal form of Mazda’s next-generation subcompact car.

By packing in the powerful and dynamic movements of KODO, Mazda has given the HAZUMI distinctive exterior styling and an athletic physique reminiscent of a small animal leaping into motion. It’s KODO, in its most highly concentrated form yet.

Design and innovation evolves

TAKERI advances further from the powerful stance of MINAGI. A concept car that explores the vast possibilities of KODO, TAKERI brings a new level of strength and allure to sedan styling.

TAKERI translated directly into the successful development of Mazda6 and All-New Mazda3.

Exploring the depths of KODO

MINAGI offers a vision of KODO design that is different to SHINARI, yet it shares the same sinuous, powerful stance. For MINAGI – which created the CX-5 – Mazda designers looked at cheetahs while they hunted.

They set out to evoke the moment when an animal contracts its muscles – ready to sprint and lunge at its prey.

The purest expression of KODO

SHINARI introduced ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ to the world. This four-door, four-seat sports coupe concept demonstrates the smooth, yet dynamic lines that are an inherent part of KODO.

SHINARI has a sense of motion and aerodynamic form, even when standing still. It perfectly expresses the theme of motion in a graceful and carefree form.
